Chapter 40 of the Quran, known as Al-Ghafir ("The Forgiver") or Al-Mu'min("The Believer"), is a Meccan surah that focuses on the core tenets of faith, the consequences of rejecting the truth, and the absolute power of God. It is part of a group of seven consecutive surahs that begin with the abbreviated letters Ḥā Mīm. The surah's alternate title, Al-Mu'min, comes from the powerful story of a believing man who concealed his faith in Pharaoh's court.
The surah begins by affirming that the Quran is a divine revelation from God, who is described as the All-Mighty and All-Knowing. Key divine attributes mentioned are God as the "Forgiver of sin," the "Acceptor of repentance," and "Severe in punishment".
To illustrate the fate of those who deny the truth, the surah recounts the stories of past nations like the people of Noah, 'Ad, and Thamud, who were ultimately destroyed by God's punishment. The surah portrays scenes of the people of Pharaoh being exposed to the fire "morning and evening" and the disputes that will occur among the residents of Hell. The surah offers comfort to the Prophet Muhammad and his followers, who were being persecuted by the Quraysh in Mecca.
