Surah Ad-Dukhan, “The Smoke”, the 44th chapter of the Quran, is a Meccan surah and consists of 59 verses. The surah begins by affirming that the Quran is a clear, divine scripture revealed on a blessed night, widely understood as Laylat al-Qadr (The Night of Decree). To illustrate the consequences of arrogance and rejection, the surah recounts the story of Prophet Moses and Pharaoh. It warns disbelievers of the consequences of their rejection while offering comfort and a reminder of ultimate victory to believers. The surah is named "The Smoke" (Ad-Dukhan) after the mention of a great, visible smoke in verse 10, a sign of impending punishment for the deniers of the truth.
